Our first full day in China we visited the Forbidden City 紫禁城, the home of the emperors and Chinese government.  It is absolutely magnificent, 180 acres with almost 1000 buildings!  We walked through and covered 10 kilometers in the little we actually saw.

The Great Wall Marathon & Half - #runlikehales

This was an amazing experience!  What a rush it was to run a half marathon on top of the Great Wall of China.  A bucketlist race that I never really thought we'd get to do.

(In true Christy fashion, this is long.)


Based on the fact that this is a one of a kind course/experience with thousands of stairs/steps, we set one goal for this race.

Eight Months!

This is about half a month late because LIFE, but B3 hit 8 months old!!  I tend to think that every stage is my favorite, but this stage is definitely my favorite.  haha  He has so much personality, a huge [wide] grin, can sit and play for long periods of time, but he isn't into everything quite yet.  Gosh, LOVE HIM.

Great Wall Marathon - Inspection Day!


Two days before the Great Wall Marathon, the race directors held an inspection day!  The goals were to better understand the race route/directions, enjoy the wall/have photo opts without interrupting your actual race, and literally inspect the steps you will be running (aka risking your life) on.

Ni Hao!

Thursday we had an inspection day on the Great Wall of China.  We hiked up and down the steps we'd be running on race day!  It was beyond incredible!


Saturday was race day which was a surreal experience.  If you look at the image below, the Great Wall is clear at the top, on top of the mountain.  The first five kilometers were a pretty steep climb just to get to the base of the wall, but the energy was just amazing!!


I have so many neat pictures and experiences to share.  What a trip this has been!  China is awesome.

10 Ways to Find Your Running MOJO

Every athlete goes through periods of lessened activity or lack of motivation.  Be it injury, pregnancy, adjusting to a new phase of life, or burnout, sooner or later we want to make our way back to working on specific goals!!  But where do we find the inspiration?

10-Ways-To-Find-Your-Running-Mojo

1.  New workout clothes/shoes
If nothing more, you will want to wear your cute new clothes!  Getting changed into workout attire can be the hardest step towards working out.  Now you're eliminating that obstacle altogether.

2.  Read race recaps
Google "marathon recap," "my first marathon recap," or a specific race, and you will find numerous posts full of inspiring runners' stories.  (I also like to do this when I'm narrowing down race options.)

3.  Read your own race recaps!
If you write a blog, go through your archives and remember your own experiences.  Nothing is more encouraging than remembering how you felt crossing the finish line of your first half or full marathon.  If you don't write a blog, go back through your race pictures.

4.  Create a new playlist 
Listen to your new playlist only while you run, that way you'll look forward to it each time.

5.  Watch race recaps on YouTube
One of my favorites is a short blurp on Boston, 2011.  I've also watched my own first marathon video numerous times to remember how I felt that day/moment.




6.  Join a running/track club
Get to know others with similar goals who can help push you along or inspire you with their own goals.  Plus everything is more fun when it's social!

7.  Register for a race
Use runningintheusa.com to help you decide on your perfect race.

8.  Add up your miles
Set a goal # of miles to run for the year and track them as you go via spreadsheet, notebook, DailyMile, Garmin Connect, a gadget on your blog, etc...

9.  Leave your Garmin at home 
Run a course you already know the distance (or create a course on mapmyrun) so you won't be pressured by your pace, especially if your fitness levels aren't as high as they used to be.  Or turn off the pace if your watch has the option.
I have the Garmin 620 and absolutely love it.  I highly recommend it if you love lots of data!


10.  Become a spectator!
Nothing is more inspiring than seeing hundreds or thousands of runners crossing that finish line.


Most importantly, don't stress yourself out if what you really need is a break!!  When you're ready to get back to it, hopefully the list above can help you find your way back to setting and reaching your goals.  It has helped me over the past six months as I make my way back from pregnancy, and I can't wait to set some fall goals!

Great Wall Training Weeks 10 & 11

We're into the double digits on number of weeks in training which means double digit running.  Week 10 was pretty epic.  Being back on the track is awesome, I felt awesome on the 10-miler, plus the weather was stormy.  I have missed longer runs!!  THEY ARE MY FAVORITE.

I did five with little man.  He's cute!!  Soon it will be too hot to bring him along.  We hit our first triple digit temps on May 1st!  Roasty toasty.

After track practice this past week, I woke up with that little knee niggle I had noticed a few weeks back.  I decided to stretch/roll/smash it out on Saturday instead of running 6.  Hopefully I can resolve it asap!  I think it's due to my longer run increase + some speed work, because other than that adjustment for my legs, my mileage is low.

Nothing keeps a runner up at night like the mind wandering down the path of injury.  I'm the injury mind wandering master.

This upcoming week will be another easy one.  This China trip has been in the works for like three years, and it's staring us in the face.  I can't believe we're already into the month of May, 2015!
