Week 15: Taper Time

Another week has come and gone in the blink of an eye, actually 15 weeks now, so it's time to taper!  Although this week wasn't as intense as last week so I'd say we peaked last weekend.  I have been doing two week tapers for the marathon but it feels like I've been reaching my limits and passing them over and over this cycle (I have just been feeling exhausted), so I think that's why this week was toned back.  I was happy about it!  It's also nice when you view 15 miles as "only 15 miles."  That is a good spot to be in mentally I would think.

In the spring we ran SLC and they had free pictures -- YAA!!  I was pretty excited and saw a bunch of cameras on the course, or at least like 3-4 of them.  #pose

Running Questionnaire

1. What's your favorite type of running shoe?
Right now I love the Saucony Triumph ISOs, on my 3rd pair.

2: Do you run to music?
Yes - It pumps me up!  This morning B3 and I blasted Christmas music (PENTATONIX!) and a lady walking her dog was like "Christmas??"

3: Do you run in a gym or outdoors?
Right now mostly treadmill during the week and long run outside.

4: Do you bring a sports drink or water out with you when you run?
Usually just water.  And GU.

5: How many miles can you run without breaking?
Breaking = stopping?  I'm not sure.

6: Do you prefer long, mid or short distance running?
I like anything over the 1/2 marathon distance the most.

7: How long have you been running?
Junior high

8: What do you think about when you run?
Usually race day and my goals, and how well I think I could hit them if race day was now.

9: Do you run when you’re emotional?
Yes

10: Have you noticed any changes in your life since you started running?
More fit, more confident, more able to down Halloween candy by the bulk, more sane haha

11: Do you stretch?
Yes

12: Do you plan your day around your run or your run around your day?
Both!

13: Do you run with someone else?
Usually solo, I like focusing on my workout.

14: What motivates you to run?
PRs, enjoying the weather, racing, being able to eat whatev

15: Are you surprised with how well you run?
I wish.  lol  I missed out on that gene.

16: Do you run marathons/races/both?
The last year and a half I have been most excited about the marathon but I need to focus on the 1/2 sometime because I know I have PRs there awaiting.

17: What’s your best mile time?
I'm am not sure I even have timed a mile.  I've always missed track night where they did the mile!  I should try this fall.

18: Do you run to keep fit or keep fit to run?
Both

19: Do you prefer to run in heat or in cold?
This one is weird.  I prefer to run in cooler temperatures, but I sure don't like the cold.  The warm up is one of misery.

20: Is it hard for you to get out of the house to run?
Not really.  Sometimes it's hard to get out of bed to get on the treadmill tho...

21: Do you ever regret not running?
Yup

22: Do you keep a record of your running times?
Yes, Garmin Connect, Daily Mile, Training Peaks

23: Do you have a running idol?
Lots of them:  Shalane Flanagan, Kara Goucher, Meb Keflexzighi

24: Does anyone else in your family run?
Everybody but my mom who I'm still working on.  I have this feeling that she'd be fast!

25: Are you currently trying to become a better runner?
Yes, I hope for many more PRs.

26: Do you run when you have nothing else to do?
No because I have a little boy.  :)

27: How often do you run?
4x unless I'm into marathon training then 5x week

28: What is your biggest running-related dream?
1-  BQ
2-  BQ and get in to Boston and RUN Boston.  I am going to try when my BQ time drops to 3:40, so after two more years and maybe another baby.
3-  win a race (maybe Joe Shmo's farm 5k or something unheard of by everyone ...but me)

29: Will you run for the rest of your life or just until you become what you want?
Forever

30: What are your favorite exercises to team with running?
CrossFit, or just strength training on my own because I can do that in the garage.  Also anything dance-y.  I wish I liked cycling more because I love the music part, perhaps I need to give it a better shot.

Trunk or Treat

We went to our first Trunk or Treat last weekend!!  Although we did leave after the dinner portion because the 8:45am nap was taking a toll, plus I had a 4:30am wake up call, so we didn't really experience the actual trunk or treating part.  lol


B3 was/is a minion this year!  It only makes sense considering he loves them so.  He had a minion birthday party, wears minion tattoos all the time (we switch them every coupla days), has minion stuffed animals, and is watching MINIONS as I type this post.

Week 14: 20 miles

Going into this weekend's 20 miler I was not really looking forward to it, which if you know me you know that is rare.  I live for my Saturday morning long runs!  I'm not sure why I was feeling this way, but if I were to guess it would probably be somewhat due to watching the news and hearing that a heat wave was coming in for the weekend and I knew that meant I would struggle in the latter part of the run, which is already the toughest part anyway.  I don't know why I am surprised, I mean I do live in Arizona, and I did pick a fall marathon, soooo...

I came up with the idea to start on the treadmill while it was dark out, then dart out for the last 16/faster miles, and it was perfect!

The Nap Trap

We're going through this phase where B3 wants to nap really early on, like 7:45, or today it was 8:45.  He comes to me and says DEEZ DEEZ DEEZ (please) so I get up and follow a giddy boy to his crib.


Well today I told him no, it was too early and by afternoon it makes life rough because he's SO tired that it's hard to manage.  I tried a second nap once, which was great until about 8-9pm when he wanted to party, so today it was no.

That did not go over well.  But I was holding firm with a no.


It's 11.  He's been asleep for two+ hours.  

I love him.

Harry Potter & the Butter Beer

So I put "WATCH HARRY POTTER" on my 32 list because I am probably the only person who has gone to Harry Potter Land yet never even seen the show (insert judgement, I know).

I had an interesting conversation the other day, with my sister in-law, that went something like:

"So you ready to do a Harry Potter marathon?"

"Marathon?  Huh?"

"Watch the Harry Potters."

"There's more than one?"

"Hahaha yeah, there's like seven or eight or something."


Later that night, a conversation with Ben:

"Did you know there are seven or eight Harry Potters?!?"

"Yup, I was proud you wanted to watch it.  It's a commitment!!"

"WHY DIDN'T ANYBODY TELL ME THAT!?"


Moving on, I figured since I only have one year to fit these all in, we had better get watchin', so we watched the first Harry Potter this past weekend, complete with butter beer, or a butter beer attempt at least.  It needed some fine tuning but was fun to try to make.

Essentially you freeze some cream soda to have cream soda ice cubes to then mix with the regular cream soda for a slushy version of the butter beer (my fav type).  The downside of freezing is the lack of carbonation after melting, so when my frozen cream soda was NOT frozen after three long hours but was already lacking in carbonation, I mixed too much of it with the regular and it came out semi slushy, yet not really carbonated.  It was tasty still, and the heavy cream mixed with butterscotch topping was tasty, plus I had added butterscotch to the cream soda too so it was obviously good.

As for the movie, I actually liked it!  It came out 15 years ago (crazy) so it was obviously old, but despite not being a fantasy person, I am looking forward to the next movie.

Ben didn't like it.  I guess he had never seen the first one himself.  hahaha  He reads a lot of Brandon Sanderson, etc., fantasy, but not young adult, but he has to watch the rest with me either way.  That's what husbands do.  

Harry Potter Land in August this year.


I saw something in the theaters about the upcoming Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, five movies long.  I wonder if that's something we'd/I'd be interested in.

Running Gear Galore

Now that we're <a month from the race, my mind is mostly churning out non-stop running related stuff, we're dialing in our nutrition, and practicing our race day practices.  For instance, while training I can plop my water and GU in the center of a route and stop by and grab it in between sets as needed, but on race day I have to actually carry it and it can be HEAVY on my waist, so I have two different belts I wear:  one is really light for the 1/2 marathon, the other is bigger and can hold the weight of six GU without them twisting the strap and bouncing all over the annoying place.  (If you're curious, this is how I carry SIX GU, chafe free.)

GU, eh, it's not great, but the Salted Caramel is the best and while running it's much easier to suck down really fast than if you just opened it up and tried it. I used to use Shot Bloks or Sport Beans but it's 3 blocks = 1 GU and that is so many sweet Shot Bloks to consume!!  And one package of beans takes a lot longer to down than a quick slurp of a GU.

Not shown here is GOOGLE MUSIC which is the best invention!  I was a dedicated iPod user but then my techy bro introduced me to Google Music and for a small subscription fee, you can stream any song and download it in playlists to your phone while not needing any service/wifi to play them (kinda like an iPod).  It is nice to switch up my playlists without spending $1+ per song.

Basically there is a lot of stuff when it comes to running, I finally realized this when Ben and I laid it all out the night before Mt. Charleston.  Running is not free.  lol  It's freaking expensive!

But addicting and fun.

Week 13: ZzZzZ

I'm tired. 

That sums it up.  This week I am feeling it!  Usually I get to sleep in on Tuesdays/Fridays, but we're up to five days of running, so Friday, I am looking just at you, my love.  By sleep in I mean like 6:30-7, but it's at least getting light outside by then!  I would even sleep in until 7:30, but... toddler.  On occasion he will give me a gift and we will make it to the alarm, but there's too many toys that need to be thrown around the house to get that crazy all the time.

More so I am just feeling the mileage increase and my appetite is out of control.  Run fast, wake up and run on tired legs, run long now in 75 degrees and the shade of a cactus, it's a vicious cycle that I usually am in love with, but I am struggling this week with my motivation.  I suppose it happens to the best of us.


Despite my lack of eagerness to wake up early to jump on the treadmill, I had a pretty decent week and still hit my paces while watching America's Next Top Model.  

Since it has cooled down a little bit I have noticed pushing the stroller to feel easier, so Bentz has joined me for my cool downs which has rocked.  He's so cute all tired and in Halloween pajamas.

^^I tell ya, if you haven't bought Lipsense yet, do it.  This is the next morning for crying out loud.

My long run went alright, I still can't decide how I feel about it.  I hit all my paces just fine and had a 4 mile cool down at the end which was the hardest part.  :P  I literally ran up and down one street because it was the only one with any shade left, so crafty am I.  I was chatting with Ben this morning after he had a great 18-1/2 miler at an "easy" pace of 7:45, about how I am feeling the least confident about this marathon coming up.  Usually I am running paces faster than my goal pace and I'm feeling pretty solid in what I'm aiming to run, but this time I'm feeling much more tired at the end of my runs and my recovery is much longer afterwards.  Ben is great at reminding me what I'm capable of when you remove a couple degrees and that's nice to hear because he does know my running pretty well by now and I value his insight.

About a month ago we started a new thing where after my run, Ben quickly works out while Bentz and I frequent the park, then we go grab bagels and breakfast and eat on the patio!


It's a pretty epic tradition, we should have started it years ago!

Two weeks until the taper and they will be pretty intense with at least one 20 miler, if not two.  We shall see!  #Iwillsurvive  Meanwhile I have been working on picking out my outfit and I think I have it nailed down.  The color I'm going with is TURQUOISE.  
