Year 2015!

2015 was a year of learning to parent, spending time as a new family of three (plus doggy), re-prioritizing our evenings together, gaining our fitness back from pregnancy and back surgery (Ben), and spending time with our own families!

In January we started the year off with a three month old.  It's surprising to me that this was last year because it feels longer ago that we had a chubby baby.  Now he's a busy toddler, opening doors and getting into all his FAVORITES.

We also went to the Hot Air Balloon festival, which was anticlimactic, but it's always fun to do anything as a fam.

In February we drove to Tucson to pick up my youngest brother from his mission.  Now he's basically five seconds from getting married.

Climb Every Mountain

Now that the holidays are all over it's back to working on some of my 31 while 31 activities, so we started out with a family hike!  Last weekend we met some neighbors at the park and they have a little boy two weeks older than B3, so we got together for a hike.

Right now our weather is amazing!!  Perfect for some wandering with a baby on the back, sans melting.  Maybe 60s out and have I mentioned so glorious.

B3 the master hiker zZzZzZz

When I first moved to Arizona I thought this place was mostly a mixed bag of ugly dirt and weeds.  Now when I visit my home town I feel a jolt of claustrophobia with the tall, bushy trees along my childhood streets.  It's interesting how it changes because almost five years later I view the desert as ridiculously pretty and I love me some cacti.  (Just not in my yard.  I do have a toddler.)

We've kept busy and done a lot of fun things this month which is nice because the post Christmas let-down is massive in my heart, then the post race blues have hit, oh so many posts.  Woe is me.

But look how cute:

Love this little family of mine.  We make a pretty good team!!

Rock 'n' Roll Arizona 1/2 + 5k

We ran PF Chang's Rock 'n' Roll, which apparently isn't P.F. Chang's anymore, buuuuut still, Ben ran the remix challenge (5k + 1/2) and I ran the 1/2.

Last time we ran this we got stuck in the thick of horrendous traffic and got to the start line five minutes early.  This race is pretty huge, maybe 20,000+ people, so this year we tried parking at the finish, which is 1.5 miles from the start, used the bathrooms there (no lines!), and used that distance to the start line as a part of our warm up.  The bathroom lines at the start were absolutely atrocious so this plan worked perfectly!!  #somebodysagenius  

Before each race Ben and I make race plans/strategies with Charlie who coaches us.  This wasn't a goal race for me but I was still planning to push myself.  Based on that I was supposed to start out around 9:10 miles and drop down to 9:00 after 4-5 miles.  There is a hill at mile 8.5 and after that hill I was to pick it up if I was feeling good, and kick it to the finish for a 1:59 or faster.

Ben's still working his way back from back surgery, so each race he takes a couple of minutes off from the last one.  His last half he ran a 1:45 so he was set up to run a 1:43.

My pacing was pretty erratic to get me around 9:00 miles for the first half.  Every time I checked my watch I had to slow down, which sometimes is a nice thing but still a thing when you have a million miles until the finish.  After the hill I just let myself ruuuuun and I felt really great and settled in around 8:35.

Throughout the course I took three GU:  3, 7, 10 miles, and I drank water at every aid station, and Gatorade at mile 6ish.  My stomach handles it all well and I find it really beneficial to fuel every 3-4 miles.

8:58 <---hill

Official time:  1:54:57 @ 8:46
A new official PR for me!

Ben's official:  1:40:32 @ 7:40
Good races for us both.  Wahoo!

I should have hired a coach a long, long time ago!  This was my fastest half race (of 9 I think), yet my easiest effort wise.  I never loathed the distance still ahead of me and my legs never fatigued which I'm sure comes down to the 15 mile long runs in training.

As for the course, it really isn't anything fancy but you do get some pretty views when you hit the very top, then some desert scenery for the last few miles.  It's one of those courses you might easily forget, but the elevation is fairly simple and the weather was perfect.  Not to mention the awesome running atmosphere!!!  I wanna do it again this weekend why must I wait another yeaaaaar.

Rewind to the day before when Ben ran the 5k as part of the challenge, while B3 and I cheered him on.  It was cold but quite fun!

Ben picked up his 5k bib at the race, but afterwards we still had to hit up the expo for the half.  I love expos and am not sick of them yet because I love anything running, obviously, so we walked around and ran into my favorite news people from Fox 10 Phoenix who I already felt like I knew (HA) and who acted like we had been friends for years.  They're awesome!

Rock 'N' Roll medals never disappoint.  One year we'll dedicate to getting their heavy medals because they are indeed HEAVY and massive.  I swear some are over 5 lbs!

Now we're just over five weeks until Phoenix and I'm a little nervous for that one because it IS a goal race and I really want a PR there!  I don't think I'll have trouble getting one unless it's a terrrrrrible day, whereas at PF Chang's I knew even on an off day I could still beat 2:00.  So basically now I NEED a good race so I can beat 1:54, however my actual time goal tbd when we get a little closer to it.

Have a lovely humpday!  I think B3 and I are going on a little jog around the town before it gets dark.  He's such a champ, turns out he grew 8 teeth in one month for a grand total of 16.  Poor guy!  

Eating:  fruit snacks!!  the devilishly good Mott ones from Costco.  why do we buy these again?

Wearing:  Adidas pants, Hot Chocolate 15k jacket, Ragnar race tee  HA

Weather:  a little chilly, 56 and cloudy!  chance of snow at 0% 

Wanting:  to complete this job I'm working on, it's kind of a huge job and a also kind of a slight nightmare on my end.  i also want to wash my hair.

Needing:  to vacuum around my desk.  first I need to remove all the plastic balls collecting under it.  

Thinking:  weeeeeeekend.  also this is funny:

Saving for:  traveling to some races this year!  B3 flies for free $$ for <a year more so we've gotta take advantage of that.

Learning:  patience.  how to not worry about things I cannot control.  how to not care what other people think.

Enjoying:  fruit snacks!!

Reading:  Good Cop Bad Cop!  negative, not about Colborn

Planning for:  2016 vacations, races, family visits, time off work, etc., LIFE SLOW THE EFF DOWN

Watching:  The Amazing Race!  I'm on season 21 on Amazon Prime.  I watch while I work or run on the treadmill and it's basically awesome and I can't believe I've never seen it before.

Loving:  having a little one

Listening:  Movie soundtrack playlists from Google Music!  I am loving the soundtracks from Intersteller and Inception... THEY ROCK.  Sure am missing Christmas tunes though.

Anticipating:  A great race!

Thankful for:  Being able to work while simultaneously mommy-ing!

TGIF!!  Have a lovely evening!

The quickest 16 months ever.

Yesterday I took B3 on a walk around the block.  You'd think it'd only take a few minutes to walk 600 meters but not with a toddler who likes to walk up and down each driveway multiple times!  But he's so cute that I don't mind!!  Do it again little man, FIVE MORE TIMES AT LEAST.

I may have picked him up to skip over a few driveways after like 30 minutes which helped us to eventually get back to our next door neighbor's, which B3 treated as though it was his very first, screaming and talking.  Our neighbor walked up from her own walk, and was like "awhhhhhhh" right as B3 ran down her driveway, tripped, and ATE IT right on his face.  It was THE WORST I tell you, so terribly sad!!  

He only had a little scrape + a giant black mark, so it wasn't as bad as I was expecting when I picked him up.  He cried, but 30 seconds later he wanted me to put him down so he could resume his runnnnnning.  Our little adventurous almost 16 month old.

I've been thinking lately that even though I take numerous videos everyday, I really need to get back to journaling or something because there are such adventures going on around here, even on boring Buhr days.

So a quickie update.

Little guy had is 15 month appointment last week (finally) and his weight went up 10%!  He's now 15% and we're so pleased!!!  That was some hard work.  Kid sure isn't a foodie.  What else, let's see...

-loves blueberries, blackberries and peas

-babbles non-stop

-says "kitten," "duck," "cuckuh," "ball," "grandma" and is starting to repeat after us

-has enough hair for a mohawk

-loves Baby Einstein and Masha and the Bear (he may have forgotten about Barney??)

-sleeps in our bed most of the time again (we're suckers.  LOVE being suckers)

-loves Legos (the huge ones) and likes to dump them out and growl while aggressively spreading them around into a huge mess

-loves when I play the piano and comes to play by me or even along with me

-sings (CUTE)

-still puts everything in his mouth

-loves to empty my bathroom drawers while I shower

-afraid of men, especially bearded ones

-goes to bed whenever and sleeps until about 7:30

-about to be weaned from his binky and mostly weaned from bottles

-squeals with delight when we put shoes on him
(he has some new Saucony kicks on their way)

-hates a diaper change

-has hazel eyes so far (which surprises me!) and they are very bright.  maybe an exact mixture of Ben and me

-is allllll over the place at church, dubbed a "roamer"

-has 12 teeth

-still naps 2x a day on most days (except today, heaven help us)

-organizes for hours on end

-has the sweetest grin and dimple

-this list is long so I'll stop but we LOVE HIM

He'll be a year and a half soon and I still can't believe he even exists.  Right now as he is carrying a book to my desk and talking to himself, I'm thinking, "who ARE you?  You're OURS?"  It's still a crazy thought that I love love love.

Upcoming Rock 'n' Roll

This upcoming weekend is our first half marathon of the year which we're excited for!!  The last few weeks of running haven't been the easiest for me and I feel like I've been constantly fatigued!  I've been running faster in some of my harder workouts and my legs are feeling it, but I've also been stretched thinner than usual since B3 just popped out four molars and that has found its way into messing with our sleep, his naps, his self entertaining, thus a lot of my work time.

As a new mom I'm amazed how something that seems so simple as growing some teeth can be such a big deal!  I mean, why can't it be like growing HAIR?  Happily little man is feeling much better and has some serious chompers now.  Our little baby boy is so big.

So lately.  I bought some new Saucony Triumph ISOs and Kinvara 6s.  I ran Canyon City in Triumphs and that was the best decision ever, so I took to Amazon to buy them for cheaper.  I'd like to race some halves in my Kinvaras but I'm not quite ready to try it.  I think the longest distance I've done in them is 7 miles.

Mt. Charleston marathon shoes.  PR shoes...
Charlie had us both run 15 milers for our peak long run for this upcoming 1/2.  My overall average pace for that run was faster than my 1/2 marathon PR pace.  haha  I'm not going to go all out at this Rock 'n' Roll, but I should still get an official PR.  My plan is to stick around 9:00-9:05 miles for around 1:59.  By next month's 1/2 I should be ready to push harder!

This is my 2x running PF Chang's, although I was pregnant the first time thus I did some run/walking.

In the meantime I hope this week's taper does some magic.

^^miles 1-2 & 9-11 were warm up/recovery

I don't think I've mentioned it here yet, but Ben's chasing a 1:29!!  He's still coming back from back surgery so each race he takes a couple of minutes off his previous time.  His PR is 1:34 (set in 2014 at SLC) and I believe he's going to run a 1:43 this weekend, with two more 1/2s before his goal race.  He set his PR when he was CrossFitting full time and not running much, so hopefully that he's now focusing on running he'll be able to do it this spring.

Meanwhile if you run/CF or anything, you need to buy this R8 Roller pronto!!!:

I got it for Christmas and I'm in love.  It's awesome to be able to "foam roll" while sitting on the couch, lounging, angrily binge-watching Making a Murderer.  Worth the money, hands down!!

5 days until our next race weekend.  <4 months until my next full.  I'm not sure if I'll track my training like I did with Canyon City, but we'll see!  Probably depends on how busy work is...

Have a fantastic Monday!

Until Next Time UTAH

My mom plays the piano at the University Mall, so on Christmas Eve Eve I joined her and we played some fun Christmas duets!!  It's always a good time because often we're sight reading so we make up random tunes and chuckle to ourselves.  I have video, but like usual it requires an extra step to post so I probably shalln't.

This #1 fan grandma said, "you know, you'll make more money in a bar."  hahaha

Christmas Time Was Here

It was a white Christmas, that's for sure!  This was Christmas eve as we were getting dumped on in the Utah County area.  Good thing Santa can fly!

Christmas Eve is hands down my most favorite day of the entire year!  The anticipation is still there, the thoughts of family time winding down have yet to hit, and it's just right in the middle of the holiday fun.

This year we had a really fun Christmas Eve, all waking up and and heading to the local community center in the morning.  My family all learned to play pickleball since my mom is a pro, while I got my run in upstairs on the little track (like 35 laps!  my poor IT band).

B3 went to childcare for his first time...ever?   I thought he'd hate me leaving him, but when I went in there and sat down with him, he got so excited about the toys and that was that.  BYE MOM.

After my run I walked past the childcare center and he was sitting on a lady's lap getting read to and he looked so happy and content.  Our little champ.   So I added on another half hour of childcare time since it was a whole $1.  haha
